How to test a gyroscope and accelerometer

  1. Open this page on the phone or tablet you want to check and press Start sensors. If the browser asks for motion and orientation access, choose Allow; browsers on iPhone and iPad ask first.
  2. Lay the device flat on a table. The bubble in Level should settle near the middle, and Tilt from flat should read close to 0° and show Level.
  3. Leave it still for a moment. Acceleration with gravity should show a Total of about 9.8 m/s², and Gravity check should read Plausible.
  4. Pick the device up and turn it slowly in every direction. Rotation rate should change while it turns and return to near 0 when you stop, and Orientation should follow the movement.
  5. For the compass, lay the device flat away from magnets, speakers and metal, then turn it slowly. Compass heading should rise as you turn clockwise and pass 0° N once per full turn.
  6. Turn the device between portrait and landscape. If Orientation changes but Screen orientation does not, auto-rotate is probably locked.
  7. Press Stop sensors to freeze the last readings on screen.

What is a gyroscope in a phone?

A gyroscope in a phone is a motion sensor that measures how fast the phone turns around each of its three axes, in degrees per second. The accelerometer measures acceleration and the pull of gravity, and the system combines both, often with the compass, to work out which way the phone is tilted and facing. Games, AR apps and image stabilization rely on it.

Why does my screen not rotate?

Auto-rotate relies on the same motion sensors this page reads, so the page can show whether the sensors respond or a setting is to blame. Screen orientation here only says portrait or landscape and the angle; for the screen’s size and resolution, use the Screen Resolution Test.

  • Check the rotation lock first. On iPhone and iPad, open Control Center and turn off the orientation lock, the padlock with a circular arrow. On Android, turn on the auto-rotate tile in Quick Settings.
  • Some apps, and the home screen on many phones, stay in portrait by design, so check in an app that rotates, such as the browser.
  • If Orientation and Acceleration with gravity change here as you turn the device, the sensors respond, so the cause is more likely a setting or the app.
  • If the page shows No sensor data on a phone, or says access was not allowed, check that motion sensors are allowed for this site (in Chrome, Site settings > Motion sensors), restart the phone and try another browser. If no browser or app gets readings, contact the device maker.

Why is my phone compass wrong?

A phone’s compass senses the Earth’s magnetic field, which is weak, so nearby magnets and metal can pull it off; Apple notes that magnetic or environmental interference can affect compass accuracy. Cases, wallets and car mounts with magnets, speakers, laptops and steel desks can all do it. Move away from them and test again.

Lay the phone flat before you read the heading: in some browsers it is right only when the phone lies flat. The page shows the heading from the browser’s readings and makes no correction of its own. Safari on iPhone and iPad gives it relative to magnetic north. On iPhone and iPad, the permission prompt may also cover the compass.

What this test can detect

  • Whether the browser receives accelerometer, gyroscope and orientation readings at all. If no reading with a value arrives within 3 seconds, the page shows No sensor data.
  • An accelerometer that reads far from gravity at rest: Gravity check flags a Total outside 9.2 to 10.4 m/s².
  • A gyroscope that does not respond: Rotation rate stays near 0, or reads Not reported, while you turn the device.
  • How far the device tilts from flat, shown by the bubble in Level and by Tilt from flat.
  • A compass that points the wrong way or drifts with the device lying flat, where the browser provides a Compass heading.
  • An auto-rotate problem: Orientation changes while Screen orientation stays the same.

How it works

The page reads devicemotion events (acceleration with and without gravity in m/s², rotation rate in °/s) and deviceorientation events (alpha, beta and gamma in degrees), and refreshes the readouts 5 times a second. Compass heading is webkitCompassHeading where the browser provides it, as Safari does on iPhone and iPad, and a negative value means none. Otherwise it is 360 − alpha from an absolute orientation event (deviceorientationabsolute, or deviceorientation marked absolute), which holds only with the device lying flat.

Gravity check waits until the Total varies by no more than 0.3 m/s² over 1 second, then counts an average of 9.2 to 10.4 m/s² as plausible. The bubble reaches the edge of the vial at 15° of tilt, and Tilt from flat reads Level within 1°.

Limitations

  • Readings are the browser’s processed values: the system may filter and combine the sensors, and browsers may limit how often readings arrive and round them to 0.1 m/s², 0.1°/s and 0.1°. The page shows each axis to one decimal place too, so a Rotation rate of 0.0 at rest may be rounding, not proof of no drift. The page cannot judge a sensor’s precision or noise, and it calibrates nothing.
  • Motion sensors need a secure (https) connection, and readings pause while the tab is in the background. iPhone and iPad ask for your permission from a tap; Chrome on Android and computers does not ask, and follows its Motion sensors site setting, which is on by default. Desktop computers usually have no motion sensors, and a laptop may have none.
  • Magnets, metal, speakers and phone cases or mounts with magnets skew the compass. Some browsers give no heading at all, and in some the heading is right only with the device lying flat.
  • A camera bump or an uneven case tilts a phone lying on a flat table, so Tilt from flat and the bubble may not read Level even on a level surface.
  • Hold the device firmly while you turn it, over a soft surface if you can, and never test while walking or driving.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the gyroscope test not work on my iPhone?

Usually because motion access was not allowed. Press Start sensors and choose Allow when asked; the page cannot read the sensors until you do. If readings still do not arrive, open the page in Safari, since some in-app browsers may send no data.

Does my laptop have a gyroscope?

It depends on the model. Some 2-in-1 laptops and Windows tablets have motion sensors, and a browser that supports motion events may read them. Without sensors, the browser sends no motion events, or events with empty values, and after 3 seconds the page shows No sensor data.

What should an accelerometer read at rest?

About 9.8 m/s² in total: the pull of gravity. Lying flat, nearly all of it is on the z axis and x and y read close to 0, while Acceleration, which leaves gravity out, reads close to 0 on every axis. A Total far from 9.8 m/s² at rest in every browser you try can mean a faulty sensor.

Can I test a controller’s gyroscope here?

No. The Gamepad API, which browsers use for controllers, does not expose a controller’s gyroscope in most browsers, so neither this page nor the Gamepad Test can show the gyro in a PS5, PS4 or Switch controller. This page reads the sensors in the phone or tablet you open it on.

How do I check the sensors on a used phone?

Open this page on the phone, press Start sensors and work through the steps above: the level, the gravity check, turning and the compass. Then check the screen with the Touch Screen Test and the Dead Pixel Test.

Are my sensor readings uploaded?

No. The readings are only used to draw this page in your browser. The site’s anonymous statistics record that the sensors started and whether data arrived, never a reading or how your device moved.
