Headphone Test

Headphones make channel problems obvious because each ear hears only its own side. These tests confirm both earpieces work, that left and right are not swapped, and that sound does not leak between sides.

Lower your volume before starting, especially with headphones. Nothing plays until you press a button.

How to use

  1. Put the headphones on the correct ears. Most are marked L and R.
  2. Turn the volume down, then press Left and Right in turn. Each tone should be heard in one ear only.
  3. Press Both to confirm the tone sounds centered inside your head.
  4. Use Separation. A tone plays in one ear while the other should stay silent; then it swaps. Any sound in the silent ear means leakage or a wiring fault.

What this test can detect

  • A dead or quiet earpiece.
  • Swapped channels or headphones worn the wrong way round.
  • Crosstalk: sound leaking into the ear that should be silent.
  • A loose plug or cable fault that cuts one side in and out.

Important

  • Bluetooth headphones sometimes mix or delay channels slightly at the start of playback.
  • Bone-conduction and single-earpiece headsets cannot show separation.
  • This test uses a synthesized tone and does not check frequency response or sound quality.
