Webcam Test
Start a live preview to check that your camera works and see the resolution and frame rate it delivers.
Press Start test and allow access once to check your camera and microphone together. You see a live preview and a microphone level meter, and the status line says whether each one works.
The camera preview and the microphone level are shown only on this page. Nothing is recorded, stored or uploaded.
Camera off · Microphone off
Runs entirely in your browser. Test results, audio and video never leave your device.
You can test your camera and microphone at the same time by opening both in one browser request and checking for a moving picture and a level that rises as you speak. Together they show that your browser receives video and sound, which a video call needs. They do not show how clear you look or sound to others.
| Status | What it means | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Camera working · Microphone working | Video frames reach the preview, and the microphone picked up sound above −60 dB. | Nothing to fix. Choose the same camera and microphone in your call app. |
| Microphone waiting for sound | The microphone is open, but only silence arrives. | Speak, then check the mute switch or key and your system’s input volume. |
| Camera blocked or Microphone blocked | The browser or your system refused access. | Allow it for this site and in your system’s privacy settings. See how to allow camera and microphone access. |
| No camera found or No microphone found | The browser cannot see a device of that kind. | Connect it, and check that it is enabled in your system’s settings. |
| Camera may be in use by another app | The device was found but could not start. | Close call apps and other browsers that may be using it, then press Start test again. |
| Camera connection lost | The device stopped during the test, for example when it was unplugged. | Reconnect it and press Start test again. |
Start test asks for the camera and the microphone in one getUserMedia request, so the browser shows one prompt. The camera is asked for an ideal 1920 × 1080 and starts at the closest size it supports. If the request fails, the page tries each device on its own to find the one with the problem, without asking again for access you refused.
Frame rate counts the frames shown over the last second with requestVideoFrameCallback. The sound goes only to a Web Audio analyzer, which turns the latest 2048 samples into an RMS level in dBFS, from −60 dB to 0 dB; a sample above 98% of full scale counts as clipping.
Usually because the app is set to other devices or cannot reach them. If both work here, choose the camera and microphone named under Device in the app’s settings, close other apps that might hold them, and allow the app in your system’s privacy settings.
Yes, as a first check that your browser can use your camera and microphone. Proctoring software and lockdown browsers run their own checks, so also run the test your exam provider gives you.
So your call or exam app can use the camera and microphone. On Windows, a camera that one app is using often cannot be opened by another. Press Start test again when you come back.
No. The microphone only feeds the level meter and is never played back, so there is no echo or feedback. To hear how you sound, record a short clip with the Mic Test with Playback.
Yes, in a mobile browser such as Safari or Chrome. Allow access when asked, then choose the front or back camera from the Camera list once the names appear.
No. The video goes straight to the preview and the sound only to the level meter, both on this page. Nothing is recorded, stored or uploaded, and Stop releases both devices. The privacy policy explains how the site handles data.
